Definition
Let be an integer, let be the symmetric group on , and let be a field. A representation of the symmetric group over is a group representation with a vector space over . The representation theory of the symmetric group is the study of these representations, of their decomposition into irreducible representations, and of their characters.
Remarks
Example: the sign map is a representation of degree , because . Non-example: let send to , each transposition to and each -cycle to . It is not a representation: the product of the transpositions and is a -cycle, while . Over , the number of irreducible representations of is the number of conjugacy classes of . Conjugacy classes correspond to cycle types, so this is the number of partitions of . The Specht modules , for a partition of , are a complete list of irreducible complex representations, without repetition. Over a field of characteristic with , the theory is the modular representation theory of , and is much less understood.
