Reproducing kernel Hilbert space
Builds on Hilbert spaceContinuous linear map
Definition
Let be a nonempty set and let be or . Let be a vector space of functions , with pointwise operations, that is a Hilbert space for some inner product. The space is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space if the following holds. For every , the evaluation map is a continuous linear map from to .
Remarks
For each there is then a unique with for all . The function on is the reproducing kernel of .
Example: , seen as functions on . Evaluation at is , and , so it is continuous. Here is the unit vector and if and otherwise.
Non-example: is not a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Its elements are classes of functions equal almost everywhere, so is not even defined on it. The continuous functions on with the inner product are not one either, because this space is not complete.
The Hardy space of the unit disc is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with kernel .
