Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let R⊆XR \subseteq X. The set RR is residual in XX if its complement X∖RX \setminus R is meagre in XX.

Remarks

Equivalently, RR contains a set ⋂n≥1Un\bigcap_{n \ge 1} U_n, where each UnU_n is open and dense in XX. Residual sets are also called comeagre sets.

Example: the set of irrational numbers is residual in ℝ\R. Its complement ℚ\Q is countable, so it is a countable union of single points, and each single point is nowhere dense.

Non-example: ℚ\Q is not residual in ℝ\R. Otherwise ℝ\R would be the union of the meagre sets ℚ\Q and ℝ∖ℚ\R \setminus \Q. This contradicts the Baire category theorem, since ℝ\R is a complete metric space.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
