Definition

Let (R,π”ͺ)(R, \mathfrak m) be a local ring. The residue field of RR is the quotient ring k=R/π”ͺk = R/\mathfrak m. It is a field because π”ͺ\mathfrak m is a maximal ideal.

Let RR be a commutative ring and 𝔭\mathfrak p a prime ideal. The residue field of RR at 𝔭\mathfrak p is the residue field ΞΊ(𝔭)=R𝔭/𝔭R𝔭\kappa(\mathfrak p) = R_{\mathfrak p} / \mathfrak p R_{\mathfrak p} of the localization of RR at 𝔭\mathfrak p.

Remarks

The field ΞΊ(𝔭)\kappa(\mathfrak p) is isomorphic to the field of fractions of the integral domain R/𝔭R/\mathfrak p.

Example: the residue field of β„€(p)\Z_{(p)} is β„€/pβ„€\Z/p\Z, since a/b↦abβˆ’1β€Šmodβ€Špa/b \mapsto a b^{-1} \bmod p is a surjection with kernel pβ„€(p)p\Z_{(p)}. The residue field of k[ ⁣[x] ⁣]k[\![x]\!] is kk, by taking the constant term. For R=β„€R = \Z, the residue field at (0)(0) is β„š\Q and the residue field at pβ„€p\Z is β„€/pβ„€\Z/p\Z.

Non-example: in the local ring ℀(p)\Z_{(p)}, the quotient ℀(p)/p2℀(p)≅℀/p2℀\Z_{(p)}/p^2\Z_{(p)} \cong \Z/p^2\Z is not a field, because p≠0p \ne 0 there and p⋅p=0p \cdot p = 0. Only the quotient by the maximal ideal is a field.
