Resolvent set
Definition
Let be a field, let be an associative algebra over with unit , and let . The resolvent set of is where invertible means being a unit of , and is the spectrum of . For , the element is the resolvent of at .
Let be a closed linear operator with domain in a complex Banach space . The resolvent set of is the set of such that maps bijectively onto with bounded inverse.
Remarks
Some authors use as the resolvent; this changes its sign only. The resolvent satisfies the resolvent identity for . It follows from .
Example: in with complex values, let . Then , and .
Non-example: for the same , the number is not in , because vanishes at and has no continuous inverse.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
