Restriction of a measure
Builds on Measure spaceMeasure
Definition
Let be a measure space and let . The restriction of to is the map given by
Remarks
The map is a measure on , because intersecting a disjoint family with gives a disjoint family with the same union intersected with . Example: if is Lebesgue measure on and , then . For a measurable one has . Non-example: for a set , the sets need not lie in , so the formula need not define a measure on . A related view keeps only the points of : the trace -algebra on , with the measure restricted to . Other notations are and .
