Definition
An abstract rewriting system is a pair of a set and a binary relation on , called the rewrite relation or reduction. For :
- means that is reachable from in zero or more steps; is the reflexive and transitive closure of ;
- means that and are related by the smallest equivalence relation containing ;
- is a normal form if there is no with . Then is a normal form of if and is a normal form.
The system is terminating, or strongly normalizing, if there is no infinite chain .
Remarks
Example: with when arises from by replacing one occurrence of by . It is terminating, since each step lowers the number of pairs of positions with a at and an at . The normal forms are the words . Non-example of termination: with and , which has the infinite chain and no normal form. A string rewriting system over an alphabet is a set of pairs of words , inducing on ; a term rewriting system rewrites terms in the same way.
