Definition
Let be a connected Riemannian manifold with Riemannian metric . For a piecewise smooth curve , its length is The Riemannian distance between points is the infimum
Remarks
Example: on with the Euclidean metric , the straight segment from to has length , and no curve is shorter, so .
Non-example: if is not connected, two points in different components are joined by no curve. Then the infimum is over the empty set, and is not a finite distance. Some authors then set .
The function is a metric on , and the topology it induces is the given topology of . Positivity for is the nontrivial part; it follows by comparing with a Euclidean metric in a chart. The infimum need not be attained: in with the Euclidean metric, , but every curve between these points avoiding is longer than .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
