Rigged Hilbert space
Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space whose inner product is linear in the first argument. Let be a subspace of with a locally convex topology such that these conditions hold:
- The inclusion is continuous.
- is dense in .
Let be the space of continuous conjugate-linear maps . Each gives the element of , and the resulting map is linear and injective. The chain is a rigged Hilbert space, or Gelfand triple. In the theory of generalized eigenvectors one also asks to be a nuclear space.
Remarks
Injectivity of comes from condition 2: if for all in a dense subspace, then . Many authors use the continuous dual of linear forms instead of ; then the map is conjugate-linear.
Example: , the Schwartz space with its Fréchet topology, , and the conjugate-linear tempered distributions. The inclusion is continuous because , and is dense in . The delta lies in but not in .
Non-example: let be the Schwartz functions that vanish on . Its closure in consists of functions that vanish almost everywhere on , so condition 2 fails. Then every supported in gives the zero functional on , and is not injective.
