Definition
Let be a finite simple graph with vertex set and edge set . The right-angled Artin group is the group with presentation A group is a right-angled Artin group if it is isomorphic to for some finite simple graph .
Remarks
Example: if has vertices and no edges, is the free group ; if is complete, is the free abelian group . Example: if is the path , the relations say that commutes with and , and generate a free group, so .
Non-example: the braid group is an Artin group but not a right-angled one. Its abelianisation is , since the relation forces there; the only right-angled Artin group with abelianisation is itself, and is not abelian.
The abelianisation of is . Two right-angled Artin groups and are isomorphic if and only if the graphs and are isomorphic. They are also called graph groups or partially commutative groups.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
