Definition

Let kk be a field and let AA be a commutative kk-algebra. For a∈Aa \in A, write aa also for the map A→AA \to A, f↦aff \mapsto af. For a kk-linear map θ ⁣:A→A\theta \colon A \to A, write [θ,a]=θ∘a−a∘θ[\theta, a] = \theta \circ a - a \circ \theta. Define subspaces Dm(A)D^m(A) of the endomorphism ring End⁡k(A)\End_k(A) by induction on m≥0m \ge 0:

  1. D0(A)D^0(A) is the set of maps f↦aff \mapsto af for a∈Aa \in A.
  2. For m≥1m \ge 1, Dm(A)D^m(A) is the set of kk-linear maps θ ⁣:A→A\theta \colon A \to A with [θ,a]∈Dm−1(A)[\theta, a] \in D^{m-1}(A) for every a∈Aa \in A.

The ring of differential operators of AA is D(A)=⋃m≥0Dm(A)D(A) = \bigcup_{m \ge 0} D^m(A), and the elements of Dm(A)D^m(A) are the differential operators of order at most mm.

Remarks

D(A)D(A) is a subring of End⁡k(A)\End_k(A), because Dm(A)∘Dl(A)⊆Dm+l(A)D^m(A) \circ D^l(A) \subseteq D^{m+l}(A). Every kk-linear derivation ∂\partial of AA lies in D1(A)D^1(A), since [∂,a][\partial, a] is multiplication by ∂(a)\partial(a). Example: let kk have characteristic 00 and A=k[x1,…,xn]A = k[x_1, \dots, x_n]. Then D(A)D(A) is generated by the multiplications by xix_i and the partial derivatives ∂/∂xi\partial/\partial x_i, and it is isomorphic to the Weyl algebra An(k)A_n(k). Non-example: let k=ℚk = \Q, A=ℚ[x]A = \Q[x] and let τ\tau be the shift f(x)↦f(x+1)f(x) \mapsto f(x + 1). Then [τ,x]=τ[\tau, x] = \tau, since τ(xf)=(x+1)τ(f)\tau(xf) = (x+1)\tau(f). If τ\tau were in Dm(A)D^m(A), then τ=[τ,x]\tau = [\tau, x] would be in Dm−1(A)D^{m-1}(A), and by induction τ\tau would be in D0(A)D^0(A), a multiplication map; this is false, so τ∉D(A)\tau \notin D(A). In characteristic p>0p > 0 the ring D(k[x])D(k[x]) is not generated by xx and d/dxd/dx, since (d/dx)p=0(d/dx)^p = 0 while the operator xp↦1x^p \mapsto 1, xj↦(jp)xj−px^j \mapsto \binom{j}{p} x^{j-p} lies in Dp(k[x])D^p(k[x]).
