Definition
A ringed space is a pair where is a topological space and is a sheaf of commutative rings on . The sheaf is called the structure sheaf. A morphism of ringed spaces consists of two parts. The first is a continuous map . The second is a ring homomorphism for each open set , compatible with restriction to smaller open sets.
Remarks
Example: let be a topological space and let be the ring of continuous functions ; then is a ringed space. The stalk at each point is a local ring, whose maximal ideal consists of the germs that vanish at .
Example: an algebraic variety over , with the ring of regular functions on , is a ringed space.
Example: any topological space with the sheaf of locally constant functions to a commutative ring is a ringed space.
Non-example: let be the ring of bounded continuous functions on an open set . Then is not a ringed space, because is not a sheaf: the sections on the intervals do not glue.
A ringed space whose stalks are all local rings is a locally ringed space; schemes and varieties are of this kind.
