Associative rings and algebras Definition
Rng
Builds on Abelian group
Definition
A rng is a set with two binary operations and such that:
- is an abelian group;
- for all ;
- and for all .
Remarks
No multiplicative identity is required; a ring is a rng that has one. Other names are non-unital ring and pseudo-ring. Example: the even integers with the usual operations form a rng; the clauses hold because they hold in and is closed under both operations. It has no identity, since forces . Non-example: with the cross product as multiplication fails clause 2. With the standard basis , one has but . Every rng embeds as an ideal in the ring with the product , whose identity is .
