Definition
Let be a bounded domain, that is, a connected open set, with boundary of class and outward unit normal vector . Let be nonzero real constants and let be a given function. For an equation for on , the Robin boundary condition is For a second-order ordinary differential equation on , where the outward normal derivatives are and , it reads
Remarks
If , the condition becomes a Dirichlet condition; if , it becomes a Neumann condition. Some authors allow these cases and also let be functions on the boundary.
Example: on with and , so . The function gives and , so it solves this boundary value problem.
Non-example: the conditions and are not of Robin type, because no derivative appears; they are Dirichlet conditions.
A Sturm–Liouville problem usually has separated conditions and , which include the Robin case.
