Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold. The metric cone over is the manifold with the metric , where is the coordinate on . The manifold is Sasakian if has an integrable almost complex structure with two properties. The metric is a Kähler metric for , and is invariant under the dilations for .
Remarks
Example: the unit sphere with the round metric. The map identifies with , and it carries to the flat metric, which is Kähler.
Non-example: the round sphere is not Sasakian. Its cone is , of odd dimension , so it has no almost complex structure at all.
A Sasakian manifold has odd dimension . The vector field , restricted to , is a unit Killing field, the Reeb vector field of the contact form , which makes a contact manifold.
