Satellite knot

Builds on KnotUnknot

Definition

Let V=S1×D2V = S^1 \times D^2 be the solid torus, and let P⊂int⁡VP \subset \operatorname{int} V be a tame knot, the pattern, such that:

  1. PP is not contained in any 33-ball in VV;
  2. PP is not isotopic in VV to the core circle S1×{0}S^1 \times \set{0}.

Let C⊂S3C \subset S^3 be a knot that is not the unknot, the companion. Let h ⁣:V→S3h \colon V \to S^3 be an embedding onto a closed tubular neighbourhood of CC. A knot in S3S^3 is a satellite knot if it is isotopic to h(P)h(P) for some such PP, CC and hh.

Remarks

Equivalently, a knot KK is a satellite knot if S3∖KS^3 \setminus K contains an incompressible torus that is not parallel to the boundary of a neighbourhood of KK. Example: let CC be a trefoil knot and let PP be the (2,1)(2, 1)-curve on a smaller concentric torus in VV. Then h(P)h(P) is a cable of the trefoil and a satellite knot. Non-example: if PP is the core circle, clause 2 fails and h(P)h(P) is just CC. Every knot sum K1#K2K_1 \# K_2 of nontrivial knots is a satellite with companion K1K_1. Whitehead doubles are satellites whose pattern has winding number 00 in VV.
