Scaling relations among critical exponents

Builds on Critical exponentWidom scaling hypothesisCorrelation function

Statement

Consider a system in dimension dd near a critical point, with the critical exponents α,β,γ,δ,ν,η\alpha, \beta, \gamma, \delta, \nu, \eta. Assume the Widom scaling hypothesis for the singular free energy fs(t,h)f_s(t, h). Assume also that, at h=0h = 0, the two-point correlation function has the scaling form G(x,t)=∣x∣−(d−2+η) g(∣x∣/ξ)G(x, t) = \abs{x}^{-(d - 2 + \eta)} \, g(\abs{x} / \xi) with ξ∼∣t∣−ν\xi \sim \abs{t}^{-\nu}, and that fs∼ξ−df_s \sim \xi^{-d}. Then:

  1. Rushbrooke: α+2β+γ=2\alpha + 2\beta + \gamma = 2;
  2. Widom: γ=β(δ−1)\gamma = \beta(\delta - 1);
  3. Fisher: γ=ν(2−η)\gamma = \nu(2 - \eta);
  4. Josephson, or hyperscaling: dν=2−αd \nu = 2 - \alpha.

Remarks

Relations 1 and 2 follow from the exponents α=2−1/a\alpha = 2 - 1/a, β=(1−b)/a\beta = (1 - b)/a, γ=(2b−1)/a\gamma = (2b - 1)/a and δ=b/(1−b)\delta = b/(1 - b) given by the Widom hypothesis. For relation 3, the susceptibility is the integral of GG over space, and the substitution x=ξyx = \xi y gives χ∼ξ2−η∼∣t∣−ν(2−η)\chi \sim \xi^{2 - \eta} \sim \abs{t}^{-\nu(2 - \eta)}. For relation 4, fs∼ξ−d∼∣t∣dνf_s \sim \xi^{-d} \sim \abs{t}^{d\nu}, while fs∼∣t∣2−αf_s \sim \abs{t}^{2 - \alpha} by the definition of α\alpha.

Example: the two-dimensional Ising model has α=0\alpha = 0, β=1/8\beta = 1/8, γ=7/4\gamma = 7/4, δ=15\delta = 15, ν=1\nu = 1 and η=1/4\eta = 1/4. All four relations hold: 0+1/4+7/4=20 + 1/4 + 7/4 = 2, 18⋅14=74\frac{1}{8} \cdot 14 = \frac{7}{4}, 1⋅(2−14)=741 \cdot (2 - \frac{1}{4}) = \frac{7}{4} and 2⋅1=2−02 \cdot 1 = 2 - 0.

The hypothesis fs∼ξ−df_s \sim \xi^{-d} is necessary for relation 4. Mean-field exponents α=0\alpha = 0 and ν=1/2\nu = 1/2 satisfy dν=2−αd\nu = 2 - \alpha only for d=4d = 4, and above four dimensions hyperscaling fails while relations 1 to 3 still hold.

Going deeper

For a student

The relations 1 and 2 involve only thermodynamics, and the Rushbrooke inequality shows that relation 1 holds at least as an inequality in general. The relations 3 and 4 involve the correlation length, and relation 4 contains the dimension dd explicitly. The renormalization group derives all four from two scaling dimensions at a fixed point. They are used to check numerical estimates of exponents and to compute the missing ones from the measured ones.
