Schatten class
Builds on Hilbert spaceCompact operatorSingular values of a compact operator
Definition
Let and be complex Hilbert spaces, and let . A compact operator with singular values belongs to the Schatten -class if The number is the Schatten -norm of .
Remarks
Example: on , the diagonal operator has , so for every . Non-example: the same operator is not in , because diverges. is the trace class, and is the class of Hilbert–Schmidt operators, with for any orthonormal basis of . For , and . Each is a two-sided ideal of the algebra of bounded operators on , and a Banach space under . The finite-rank operators are dense in each , and the operator norm satisfies . Some authors also allow , where is only a quasi-norm.
