Schechter luminosity function
Builds on Gamma functionAbsolute magnitude
Definition
Let , and be parameters. The Schechter luminosity function is the function given by Here is the number of galaxies per unit volume with luminosity between and . is a normalisation density, is the characteristic luminosity, and is the faint-end slope.
Remarks
In terms of the absolute magnitude , with , the same law reads
Example: the total luminosity density is by the substitution and the definition of the Gamma function. This is finite for ; for it gives .
Non-example: the number density diverges at when . So for such the function is not a probability density of luminosities on , and a lower cut-off is needed. Fitted values of for galaxies are usually close to .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
