Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2, and let L1,…,LnL_1, \dots, L_n be linearly independent linear forms in nn variables whose coefficients are real algebraic numbers. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. For x=(x1,…,xn)∈ℤnx = (x_1, \dots, x_n) \in \Z^n write ∥x∥=max⁡i∣xi∣\norm{x} = \max_i \abs{x_i}. Then the set of nonzero x∈ℤnx \in \Z^n with ∣L1(x) L2(x)⋯Ln(x)∣<∥x∥−ε\abs{L_1(x) \, L_2(x) \cdots L_n(x)} < \norm{x}^{-\varepsilon} is contained in the union of finitely many proper linear subspaces of ℚn\Q^n.

Remarks

For n=2n = 2, take L1(x,y)=αy−xL_1(x, y) = \alpha y - x and L2(x,y)=yL_2(x, y) = y with α\alpha a real algebraic irrational. For x/yx/y close to α\alpha, the norm ∥(x,y)∥\norm{(x, y)} is at most a constant times ∣y∣\abs{y}. Up to this constant, the inequality then reads ∣α−x/y∣<∣y∣−2−ε\abs{\alpha - x/y} < \abs{y}^{-2-\varepsilon}, and the theorem gives the Thue–Siegel–Roth theorem. The proof extends Roth's method with an auxiliary polynomial and uses the geometry of numbers. The conclusion speaks of finitely many subspaces, not finitely many points: in the example above, all the points (x,0)(x, 0) satisfy the inequality, because L2L_2 vanishes on them. Like Roth's theorem, the result is not effective.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the main tool for finiteness results on Diophantine equations in several variables, such as SS-unit equations x1+⋯+xn=1x_1 + \dots + x_n = 1. It also gives transcendence results for numbers with special digit expansions. Versions with several places, the pp-adic subspace theorem, are used for these applications.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
