Schottky group
Definition
Let be an integer. Let be open Jordan discs in the Riemann sphere whose closures are pairwise disjoint. Let and be the boundary curves of and . For each , let be a Möbius transformation that maps onto and maps onto . The group generated by is a Schottky group of genus . It is a classical Schottky group if the curves and can be chosen to be circles.
Remarks
Example: let with , , and . Their closures are disjoint, and maps the circle onto and the region onto . So is a Schottky group of genus ; the quotient of by it is a torus.
Non-example: the group generated by is not a Schottky group. Its generator is parabolic, while every element other than the identity of a Schottky group is loxodromic.
A Schottky group of genus is a free group of rank on and is a Kleinian group. The common exterior of the discs is a fundamental domain for its action on the domain of discontinuity . The quotient is a compact Riemann surface of genus .
