Schur-convex function
Builds on MajorizationPermutation
Definition
Let . For , let be the entries of in decreasing order. A vector majorizes , written , if see majorization. A function is Schur-convex if for all with . It is Schur-concave if is Schur-convex.
Remarks
A Schur-convex function is symmetric: if is obtained from by a permutation of the entries, then and , so . Every symmetric convex function is Schur-convex. For a symmetric with continuous partial derivatives on , the Schur–Ostrowski criterion says that is Schur-convex if and only if for all and all .
Example: . If , the case of the definition gives , so .
Non-example: on . The vectors and majorize each other, but .
