Statement

Let AA be an n×nn \times n complex square matrix. Then there are a unitary matrix QQ and an upper triangular matrix TT such that A=QTQ∗,A = Q T Q^*, where Q∗Q^* is the conjugate transpose of QQ. The diagonal entries of TT are the eigenvalues of AA, each repeated as often as its algebraic multiplicity.

Remarks

The proof is by induction on nn. Over ℂ\C, the matrix AA has an eigenvector vv of norm 11. Extend vv to an orthonormal basis; in this basis the first column of the matrix of AA is (λ,0,…,0)T(\lambda, 0, \dots, 0)^T. Apply the induction hypothesis to the lower right (n−1)×(n−1)(n-1) \times (n-1) block.

The order of the eigenvalues on the diagonal of TT can be chosen freely. If AA is a normal matrix, then TT is normal and triangular, hence diagonal; this gives the spectral theorem for normal matrices. The complex field matters. A real matrix with non-real eigenvalues has no factorisation A=QTQTA = QTQ^T with QQ real orthogonal and TT real upper triangular. Indeed, the diagonal of such a TT would hold the eigenvalues of AA. The real Schur form uses an orthogonal QQ and a block upper triangular TT with diagonal blocks of size 11 or 22 instead.

Going deeper

For a student

The Schur decomposition is the unitary form of triangularisation. It is stable to compute, and the QR algorithm for eigenvalues computes it. It gives quick proofs that the trace is the sum and the determinant is the product of the eigenvalues. It is also the standard route to the spectral theorem for normal matrices.
