Schur's inequality
Builds on Real numbers
Statement
Let and be real numbers. Then Equality holds if and only if , or two of are equal and the third is .
Remarks
Proof idea: the expression is symmetric, so assume . Group the first two terms as , which is because and . The last term is also .
Example: for , expanding gives In terms of the elementary symmetric polynomials , and , this reads .

For a student
Schur's inequality is a degree symmetric inequality that does not follow from Muirhead's inequality alone, because it has negative coefficients. It is a standard companion of Muirhead's inequality in proofs of symmetric inequalities in three variables. Its equality cases, which include , show that it is sharp at the boundary as well as at the centre.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
