Associative rings and algebras Modules and ideals Lemma
Schur's lemma
Builds on Module over a ringSimple module
Statement
Let be a ring and let and be simple left -modules. Let be a homomorphism of -modules. Then either or is an isomorphism.
Remarks
The kernel of is a submodule of , so it is or . The image of is a submodule of , so it is or . If , the kernel is not and the image is not , so is injective and surjective. Example: a nonzero group homomorphism , for prime, is a bijection. Simplicity is needed: the map , , is nonzero and not an isomorphism. A common form concerns an algebraically closed field , a -algebra , and a simple -module of finite dimension over . Then every endomorphism of is multiplication by a scalar.

For a student
Schur's lemma is the first tool of representation theory. It shows that the endomorphism ring of a simple module is a division ring. For representations of a group over it gives that the endomorphisms of an irreducible representation are scalars. This is the key step in the orthogonality relations for characters and in the decomposition of semisimple modules into isotypic parts.
