Scleronomous constraint
Builds on Holonomic constraint
Definition
Consider a system of point particles with position vector and time . Let be a holonomic constraint, with defined on for an open set and an interval . The constraint is scleronomous if does not depend on , that is, on . More generally, a constraint on positions and velocities is scleronomous if does not depend on .
Remarks
Example: the pendulum constraint , with fixed length , does not contain , so it is scleronomous. Non-example: a bead moves on a wire ring of radius , centred at the origin in a vertical plane through the -axis. The ring turns about the -axis with angular speed . The bead obeys and ; the first equation contains explicitly, so it is not scleronomous. When all constraints are scleronomous, the positions of the particles can be written as functions of generalized coordinates alone, without .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
