Second moment of area
Builds on Centroid
Definition
Let be a bounded measurable region in the -plane. The second moments of area of about the -axis and the -axis are The product moment of area is , and the polar moment of area about the origin is . In beam theory the axes pass through the centroid of the cross-section.
Remarks
Example: for the rectangle , , the moment about the centroidal -axis is . For a disc of radius centred at the origin, and .
Non-example: the integral is the first moment of area; it is about a centroidal axis, so it does not measure resistance to bending.
Let be the moment about a centroidal axis and the area. The parallel axis theorem gives for a parallel axis at distance . The symbol is used both for this quantity and for the mass moment of inertia, which has the mass density in the integral.
