Sectional curvature
Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold with curvature (see Riemann curvature tensor). Let and let be a -dimensional linear subspace, spanned by . The sectional curvature of is
Remarks
The value does not depend on the choice of basis of , because numerator and denominator both change by the square of the determinant of the change of basis.
Example: on the unit sphere , , so for orthonormal the numerator is and for every plane.
Non-example: is not defined when and are linearly dependent, since then they span no plane and the denominator is .
For a surface, the only plane at is , and is the Gaussian curvature. A manifold has constant sectional curvature if and only if . With the opposite sign convention for , the numerator is written .
