Seidel aberrations
Builds on Optical aberrationParaxial approximation
Definition
Consider an optical system that is rotationally symmetric about its axis. Let be the normalised height of the object point above the axis. Let be normalised polar coordinates in the exit pupil, with measured from the direction of . By the symmetry, the wave aberration is a function of , and , and it has an expansion The terms of total degree are the primary or Seidel aberrations:
- spherical aberration ;
- coma ;
- astigmatism ;
- field curvature ;
- distortion .
Remarks
The terms of degree are a change of focus and a tilt . They only move the ideal image, so they are not counted as aberrations of the image quality. A spherical mirror imaging a point on its axis has only spherical aberration among the five, since kills the other four terms. A system with only a distortion term forms sharp images, so distortion is an aberration of position, not of sharpness. In terms of ray aberrations the Seidel terms are of third order in the aperture and field, so they are also called third-order aberrations. The coefficients are often written as the Seidel sums , computed surface by surface from paraxial ray data.
