Seifert fiber space
Builds on 3-manifold
Definition
Let and be coprime integers, let be the closed unit disk and let be the rotation by the angle . The fibered solid torus is the quotient of by , decomposed into the circles that are the images of the segments . Its central circle, the image of , is called regular if and exceptional if .
A Seifert fiber space is a closed 3-manifold with a decomposition of into disjoint circles, the fibers, such that the following holds. Each fiber has a neighborhood that is a union of fibers. There is a homeomorphism from to some that maps fibers to fibers and to the central circle.
Remarks
Example: for a closed surface , the product , decomposed into the circles , is a Seifert fiber space. Each fiber has the neighborhood with a small disk around , which is .
Non-example: on the -torus , take the decomposition into images of lines parallel to . These images are not circles, because is irrational, so the clause that the pieces are circles fails.
In every fiber other than the central one closes up after trips around, so a compact Seifert fiber space has only finitely many exceptional fibers. Variants of the definition allow boundary, and, for non-orientable manifolds, fibered solid Klein bottles as neighborhoods.
