Definition

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be a finite set of integers, 𝒫\mathcal{P} a set of primes, z≥2z \ge 2, and P(z)P(z), 𝒜d\mathcal{A}_d and S(𝒜,𝒫,z)S(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{P}, z) as for the Brun sieve. Let D≥1D \ge 1. Let (λd)(\lambda_d) be real numbers indexed by the divisors dd of P(z)P(z) such that:

  1. λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1;
  2. λd=0\lambda_d = 0 for d>Dd > D.

The Selberg sieve is the upper bound S(𝒜,𝒫,z)≤∑a∈𝒜(∑d∣gcd⁡(a,P(z))λd)2=∑d1,d2∣P(z)λd1λd2 #𝒜lcm⁡(d1,d2),S(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{P}, z) \le \sum_{a \in \mathcal{A}} \Big( \sum_{d \mid \gcd(a, P(z))} \lambda_d \Big)^{2} = \sum_{d_1, d_2 \mid P(z)} \lambda_{d_1} \lambda_{d_2}\, \#\mathcal{A}_{\lcm(d_1, d_2)}, together with the choice of the weights λd\lambda_d that minimises the main term of the right side. That main term is a quadratic form in the λd\lambda_d once #𝒜d\#\mathcal{A}_d is written as Xg(d)+rdX g(d) + r_d with a multiplicative function gg and remainders rdr_d.

Remarks

The inequality holds termwise: if gcd⁡(a,P(z))=1\gcd(a, P(z)) = 1, the inner sum is λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1; otherwise the square is ≥0\ge 0. Example: take 𝒜={1,…,10}\mathcal{A} = \set{1, \ldots, 10}, P(z)=6P(z) = 6, D=3D = 3, λ1=1\lambda_1 = 1, λ2=λ3=−1/2\lambda_2 = \lambda_3 = -1/2 and λ6=0\lambda_6 = 0. The inner sum is 11 for the three aa coprime to 66, and 1/21/2 for the six aa divisible by exactly one of 22 and 33. It is 00 for a=6a = 6. So the bound is 3+6⋅14=4.53 + 6 \cdot \tfrac14 = 4.5, and indeed S(𝒜,𝒫,z)=3≤4.5S(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{P}, z) = 3 \le 4.5. Non-example: weights with λ1=0\lambda_1 = 0 fail clause 1, and then a=1a = 1 contributes 00 instead of 11, so the inequality can fail. With 0<g(p)<10 < g(p) < 1 for p∣P(z)p \mid P(z), the optimal weights give the main term X/GX / G with G=∑d∣P(z)d≤D∏p∣dg(p)1−g(p),G = \sum_{\substack{d \mid P(z) \\ d \le D}} \prod_{p \mid d} \frac{g(p)}{1 - g(p)}, and they satisfy ∣λd∣≤1\abs{\lambda_d} \le 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
