Example

A locally compact abelian group GG is self-dual if it is isomorphic, as a topological group, to its Pontryagin dual G^\widehat{G}.

  1. The real line ℝ\R is self-dual. For ξ∈ℝ\xi \in \R let χξ(x)=e2πiξx\chi_\xi(x) = e^{2\pi i \xi x}. Each χξ\chi_\xi is a continuous character, and χξ+η=χξχη\chi_{\xi + \eta} = \chi_\xi \chi_\eta. Every continuous character of ℝ\R has this form, and ξ↦χξ\xi \mapsto \chi_\xi is a homeomorphism onto ℝ^\widehat{\R} with the compact-open topology.
  2. The group ℤ/nℤ\Z/n\Z of integers modulo n is self-dual. For k∈ℤ/nℤk \in \Z/n\Z let χk(a)=e2πika/n\chi_k(a) = e^{2\pi i k a / n}. This is well defined, it is a character, and k↦χkk \mapsto \chi_k is an injective homomorphism. A character χ\chi is determined by χ(1)\chi(1), which is an nn-th root of unity, so all nn characters arise.
  3. The p-adic numbers ℚp\Q_p are self-dual. Here ψ(x)=e2πi{x}p\psi(x) = e^{2\pi i \set{x}_p}, where {x}p\set{x}_p is the pp-adic fractional part, is a character, and a↦(x↦ψ(ax))a \mapsto (x \mapsto \psi(ax)) is an isomorphism ℚp→ℚp^\Q_p \to \widehat{\Q_p}.
  4. Finite products of self-dual groups are self-dual, since the dual of a finite product is the product of the duals. So ℝn\R^n is self-dual, and every finite abelian group is self-dual, being a product of cyclic groups.

Non-example: the circle group 𝕋\mathbb{T} is not self-dual. Its dual is ℤ\Z, via n↦(z↦zn)n \mapsto (z \mapsto z^n), and ℤ\Z is countable and discrete, while 𝕋\mathbb{T} is uncountable. Likewise ℤ\Z is not self-dual.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
