Semiorder

Builds on Strict partial orderInterval order

Definition

Let XX be a set and let ≺\prec be a strict partial order on XX. Say that xx and yy are incomparable when neither x≺yx \prec y nor y≺xy \prec x. The order ≺\prec is a semiorder if, for all a,b,c,d∈Xa, b, c, d \in X:

  1. if a≺ba \prec b and c≺dc \prec d, then a≺da \prec d or c≺bc \prec b;
  2. if a≺ba \prec b and b≺cb \prec c, then a≺da \prec d or d≺cd \prec c.

Remarks

Clause 1 forbids two incomparable two-element chains, and clause 2 forbids a three-element chain with an element incomparable to all three of its elements. Example: on ℝ\R, let x≺yx \prec y when x+1<yx + 1 < y. For clause 2, if a+1<ba + 1 < b and b+1<cb + 1 < c but d≤a+1d \le a + 1, then d+1≤a+2<cd + 1 \le a + 2 < c, so d≺cd \prec c; clause 1 has a similar check. Non-example: the poset with a≺b≺ca \prec b \prec c and an element dd incomparable to aa, bb and cc satisfies clause 1 but fails clause 2. Every semiorder is an interval order. By a theorem of Scott and Suppes, a finite strict partial order is a semiorder if and only if there is a map u ⁣:X→ℝu \colon X \to \R with x≺y  ⟺  u(x)+1<u(y)x \prec y \iff u(x) + 1 < u(y).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
