Semiring of sets
Builds on SetIntersectionUnionPi-system
Definition
Let be a set. A semiring of sets on is a family of subsets of such that:
- .
- If , then the intersection is in .
- If , then there are finitely many pairwise disjoint sets such that is their union .
Remarks
The half-open intervals with form a semiring on , where when . For clause 2, . For clause 3, when , , a union of two disjoint half-open intervals. The open intervals , together with , do not form a semiring, since clause 3 fails. Indeed is not open, while a finite union of open intervals is open. By clause 2 a semiring is a ฯ-system. The finite disjoint unions of members of a semiring form the smallest ring of sets that contains it.
