Definition

Let RR be a ring with 11. The ring RR is (left) semisimple if RR, viewed as a left module over itself, is a semisimple module. That is, RR is a direct sum of minimal nonzero left ideals.

Remarks

Example: for a field FF, the ring R=M2(F)R = M_2(F) is semisimple. The left ideals L1L_1 and L2L_2 of matrices that vanish outside the first and the second column are minimal, and R=L1⊕L2R = L_1 \oplus L_2.

Non-example: ℤ\Z is not semisimple. A minimal nonzero ideal of ℤ\Z would be some nℤn\Z with n≠0n \ne 0, but 2nℤ2n\Z lies strictly inside it, so ℤ\Z has no minimal nonzero ideal.

A ring is left semisimple if and only if it is right semisimple, so one simply says semisimple. Equivalent conditions: every left RR-module is semisimple; every left RR-module is projective; RR is left Artinian and its Jacobson radical is 00. A semisimple ring is a finite direct sum of minimal left ideals, because 11 lies in a finite partial sum.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
