Definition

Let KK be a commutative ring and let AA be an associative algebra over KK. Let AopA^{\mathrm{op}} be the opposite ring of AA and let Ae=A⊗KAopA^e = A \otimes_K A^{\mathrm{op}} be the tensor product of algebras. An AA-bimodule is the same as a left AeA^e-module, and AA itself is one. Let μ ⁣:Ae→A\mu \colon A^e \to A be the map a⊗b↦aba \otimes b \mapsto ab, which is a homomorphism of AeA^e-modules. The algebra AA is separable over KK if there is a homomorphism of AeA^e-modules s ⁣:A→Aes \colon A \to A^e with μ∘s=id⁡A\mu \circ s = \id_A.

Remarks

Equivalently, AA is a projective AeA^e-module. Equivalently, there is a separability idempotent: an element e=∑ixi⊗yie = \sum_i x_i \otimes y_i of AeA^e with ∑ixiyi=1\sum_i x_i y_i = 1 and ∑iaxi⊗yi=∑ixi⊗yia\sum_i a x_i \otimes y_i = \sum_i x_i \otimes y_i a for all a∈Aa \in A; take e=s(1)e = s(1).

Example: A=Mn(K)A = M_n(K) is separable over KK. With matrix units EijE_{ij}, the element e=∑iEi1⊗E1ie = \sum_{i} E_{i1} \otimes E_{1i} satisfies ∑iEi1E1i=∑iEii=1\sum_i E_{i1} E_{1i} = \sum_i E_{ii} = 1, and for all k,lk, l the sums ∑iEklEi1⊗E1i\sum_i E_{kl} E_{i1} \otimes E_{1i} and ∑iEi1⊗E1iEkl\sum_i E_{i1} \otimes E_{1i} E_{kl} both equal Ek1⊗E1lE_{k1} \otimes E_{1l}.

Non-example: let K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t) and A=K(t1/p)A = K(t^{1/p}), a purely inseparable field extension of degree pp. Then A⊗KA≅A[x]/(x−t1/p)pA \otimes_K A \cong A[x]/(x - t^{1/p})^p has nonzero nilpotent elements, so it is not semisimple, and AA is not separable over KK.

When KK is a field, a finite-dimensional algebra AA is separable if and only if A⊗KLA \otimes_K L is semisimple for every field extension LL of KK. Equivalently, AA is semisimple and the center of each simple factor of AA is a separable field extension of KK. A finite field extension L/KL/K is a separable algebra exactly when it is a separable extension.
