Definition
Let be a Banach space over or . The space is separable if it is separable as a metric space. That is, there is a countable subset that is dense in .
Remarks
Equivalently, there is a countable set whose linear span is dense in . Indeed, finite combinations of elements of with rational (or Gaussian rational) coefficients then form a countable dense set. Example: is separable. The finitely supported sequences with rational entries form a countable set . For and , choose with . Then choose rational with . Then is within of . Non-example: is not separable. For each subset of its indicator sequence lies in , and for . The open balls of radius around these uncountably many points are disjoint, so no countable set meets them all. If the dual is separable, then is separable; the converse fails, as with shows.
