Definition
Let be a morphism of schemes, and let be the fiber product of with itself, with projections . The diagonal of is the unique morphism with . The morphism is separated if is a closed immersion. A scheme is separated if the unique morphism is separated.
Remarks
Example: every morphism is separated. The diagonal is of the multiplication map , , which is surjective, so the diagonal is a closed immersion. Non-example: let be the affine line over a field with a doubled origin, the gluing of two copies of along the identity of . Then is not separated. Let be the two inclusions, and let . The preimage of the diagonal under is , the set where and agree. This set is not closed in , so the image of the diagonal is not closed. A morphism is separated if and only if its diagonal has closed image, since the diagonal is always an immersion.
