Definition

Let XX be a topological space. A set A⊆XA \subseteq X is sequentially closed when the following holds. If a sequence (xn)(x_n) in AA converges in XX to a point xx, then x∈Ax \in A. XX is a sequential space when every sequentially closed subset of XX is closed.

Remarks

Every closed set is sequentially closed, so in a sequential space the two notions agree. Equivalently, a set UU is open if and only if every sequence that converges to a point of UU is eventually in UU. In a sequential space, a map to any topological space is continuous if and only if it preserves limits of convergent sequences. Quotients of sequential spaces are sequential, and the sequential spaces are exactly the quotients of first-countable spaces.

Example: every first-countable space is sequential. If x∈A‾x \in \overline{A} and U1⊇U2⊇⋯U_1 \supseteq U_2 \supseteq \cdots is a neighbourhood base at xx, choose xn∈A∩Unx_n \in A \cap U_n; then xn→xx_n \to x, so a sequentially closed AA contains xx.

Non-example: let XX be an uncountable set whose closed sets are XX and the countable subsets. A convergent sequence in XX is eventually constant, so every subset of XX is sequentially closed. But an uncountable proper subset is not closed, so XX is not sequential.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
