Algebraic topology Homotopy groups Theorem
Serre's finiteness theorem
Builds on Homotopy groups of spheresHomotopy group
Statement
Let and , and let be the homotopy group of the -sphere.
- If , and it is not the case that is even and , then is a finite group.
- If is even, then for a finite abelian group .
Remarks
Since , the theorem says exactly which homotopy groups of spheres are infinite: , and for even . The proof uses the Serre spectral sequence and Serre's theory of classes of abelian groups. For odd , it shows that a map representing a generator induces isomorphisms on . For even , the Whitehead product has Hopf invariant , so it has infinite order. Example: is the case , , with , and . In particular, every stable homotopy group with is finite.

For a student
The theorem says that the rational homotopy groups of spheres are very simple, even though the integral groups are not. It is a starting point of rational homotopy theory. It reduces the study of homotopy groups of spheres to their -primary parts, one prime at a time.
