Builds on Commutative ringNoetherian ringKrull dimensionFinitely generated projective moduleRank of a projective module

Statement

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension dd. Let PP be a finitely generated projective RR-module whose rank is greater than dd at every prime ideal of RR. Then P≅P′⊕RP \cong P' \oplus R for some finitely generated projective RR-module P′P'.

Remarks

The proof finds a unimodular element of PP, that is, an element pp such that f(p)=1f(p) = 1 for some linear form f ⁣:P→Rf \colon P \to R; then P=Rp⊕ker⁡fP = Rp \oplus \ker f. Such an element is built by a general position argument. Since the rank exceeds the dimension, one can choose pp so that its image in P𝔭/𝔭P𝔭P_\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p} P_\mathfrak{p} is nonzero at every prime 𝔭\mathfrak{p}. Repeating the theorem shows that every finitely generated projective module of constant rank n>dn > d is P0⊕Rn−dP_0 \oplus R^{n-d} with P0P_0 of rank dd.

Example: for a Dedekind domain (d≤1d \le 1), every finitely generated projective module of rank n≥1n \ge 1 is Rn−1⊕IR^{n-1} \oplus I with II of rank 11. This is part of the description of K0K_0 of a Dedekind domain.

The rank hypothesis cannot be weakened to rank dd. Let A=ℝ[x,y,z]/(x2+y2+z2−1)A = \R[x, y, z]/(x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - 1), of Krull dimension 22, and let PP be the kernel of (u,v,w)↦ux+vy+wz(u, v, w) \mapsto ux + vy + wz from A3A^3 to AA. Then PP has rank 22, and a free summand AA in PP would give a nowhere-vanishing tangent vector field on the 22-sphere, which does not exist.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem says that "large" projective modules carry no new information beyond a module of rank at most dd. Combined with the Bass cancellation theorem, it shows that in rank greater than dd, a projective module is determined by its class in K0(R)K_0(R). Over a ring of dimension 00 or 11 it reduces the classification to modules of rank at most 11.
