Definition

Let S=⨁d≥0SdS = \bigoplus_{d \ge 0} S_d be a graded ring, and let X=Proj⁡SX = \operatorname{Proj} S be given by the Proj construction. For an integer nn, let S(n)S(n) be the graded SS-module with S(n)d=Sn+dS(n)_d = S_{n + d}, where Se=0S_e = 0 for e<0e < 0. Let MM be a graded SS-module, and let f∈Sf \in S be homogeneous of positive degree. Let M~\widetilde{M} be the sheaf on XX with sections M(f)M_{(f)} over D+(f)D_+(f), where M(f)M_{(f)} is the degree zero part of MfM_f. The twisting sheaf of degree nn is the quasi-coherent sheaf 𝒪X(n)=S(n)~\mathcal{O}_X(n) = \widetilde{S(n)}. Serre's twisting sheaf is 𝒪X(1)\mathcal{O}_X(1).

Remarks

Let S=k[x0,…,xr]S = k[x_0, \dots, x_r] over a field kk, with r≥1r \ge 1, so that X=ℙkrX = \mathbb{P}^r_k. Then 𝒪X(n)\mathcal{O}_X(n) is an invertible sheaf, and its global sections are the homogeneous polynomials of degree nn for n≥0n \ge 0, and 00 for n<0n < 0. On D+(xi)D_+(x_i), the section xinx_i^n generates 𝒪X(n)\mathcal{O}_X(n), which gives the local isomorphism with 𝒪X\mathcal{O}_X. If SS is generated by S1S_1 as an S0S_0-algebra, then each 𝒪X(n)\mathcal{O}_X(n) is invertible and 𝒪X(n)⊗𝒪X(m)≅𝒪X(n+m)\mathcal{O}_X(n) \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(m) \cong \mathcal{O}_X(n + m). Without that hypothesis 𝒪X(1)\mathcal{O}_X(1) need not be invertible. Take S=k[x0,x1,x2]S = k[x_0, x_1, x_2] with x0,x1x_0, x_1 of degree 11 and x2x_2 of degree 22, and the point pp where x0=x1=0x_0 = x_1 = 0. On D+(x2)D_+(x_2), the sections of 𝒪X(1)\mathcal{O}_X(1) need the two generators x0x_0 and x1x_1 near pp, so 𝒪X(1)\mathcal{O}_X(1) is not invertible at pp. For a quasi-coherent sheaf ℱ\mathcal{F}, one writes ℱ(n)=ℱ⊗𝒪X(n)\mathcal{F}(n) = \mathcal{F} \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(n), the twist of ℱ\mathcal{F} by nn.
