Sérsic profile
Builds on Incomplete gamma functionGamma function
Definition
Let , and . Let be the unique solution of , where is the gamma function and is the lower incomplete gamma function. The Sérsic profile with index , effective radius and effective surface brightness is the function of the projected radius
Remarks
The total luminosity is by the substitution . The same substitution shows that the light inside is , so the choice of makes the radius that contains half of the light, and . A good approximation is for not too small. In magnitudes per unit area, the profile is a straight line in .
Example: for the profile is the exponential disk with and . The condition is , which gives .
Non-example: a power law is not a Sérsic profile for any , since its integral diverges, while every Sérsic profile has finite total light.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
