Sesquilinear form

Definition

Let VV be a vector space over C\C. A sesquilinear form on VV is a map φ ⁣:V×V→C\varphi \colon V \times V \to \C such that, for all u,v,w∈Vu, v, w \in V and a∈Ca \in \C:

  1. φ(u+v,w)=φ(u,w)+φ(v,w)\varphi(u + v, w) = \varphi(u, w) + \varphi(v, w) and φ(au,w)=a φ(u,w)\varphi(au, w) = a\, \varphi(u, w).
  2. φ(u,v+w)=φ(u,v)+φ(u,w)\varphi(u, v + w) = \varphi(u, v) + \varphi(u, w) and φ(u,aw)=aˉ φ(u,w)\varphi(u, aw) = \bar a\, \varphi(u, w).

Remarks

Here the form is linear in the first argument; many authors, especially in physics, use linearity in the second argument instead. A sesquilinear form is Hermitian when φ(v,u)=φ(u,v)‾\varphi(v, u) = \overline{\varphi(u, v)} for all u,vu, v. On Cn\C^n, each sesquilinear form is φ(x,y)=y∗Mx\varphi(x, y) = y^* M x for one n×nn \times n complex matrix MM. A complex inner product is a positive definite Hermitian sesquilinear form.

Explanations

L1 human

Over the complex numbers, bilinear forms cannot be positive, because φ(iv,iv)=−φ(v,v)\varphi(iv, iv) = -\varphi(v, v). Sesquilinear forms fix this by conjugating the scalar in one argument. The standard inner product ∑ixiyi‾\sum_i x_i \overline{y_i} on Cn\C^n is the main example.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
