Definition
Let be a morphism of schemes. Let be the diagonal morphism into the fiber product. The morphism is an immersion, so there is an open subscheme such that is a closed immersion of into . Let be the ideal sheaf of in . The sheaf of relative differentials of over is a quasi-coherent -module.
Remarks
If maps into , then is the quasi-coherent sheaf associated to the module of Kähler differentials . There is a universal derivation , and is generated by the sections . If is a variety over a field , one writes , the cotangent sheaf.
Example: for , is free of rank with basis . This matches for the polynomial ring .
Non-example of local freeness: for the cuspidal curve with , is generated by with the relation . Its fiber at the origin has dimension , while the generic rank is , so is not locally free there. An irreducible variety over a perfect field is smooth over if and only if is locally free of rank .
