Shear and moment diagram
Builds on Bending momentBeam theory
Definition
Let a beam occupy and carry a distributed transverse load , point forces and point couples, together with its support reactions, in equilibrium. Let be the shear force and the bending moment at the section . The shear diagram is the graph of on , and the moment diagram is the graph of on . Between point loads they satisfy At a point force in the direction of , the function jumps by . At a point couple, jumps by the value of the couple, with the sign given by the convention.
Remarks
Example: a simply supported beam with a uniform load has reactions at both ends. Its diagrams are and . Check: , , and at the hinged ends. The moment is largest, , at mid-span, where .
Non-example: the deflection curve of the beam is not a moment diagram. It depends on the stiffness, while of a statically determinate beam does not.
A local extremum of in a span occurs where changes sign.
