Shilov boundary

Definition

Let AA be a commutative complex Banach algebra with unit, and let Δ(A)\Delta(A) be its character space, a compact Hausdorff space. For a∈Aa \in A, let a^\hat a be its Gelfand transform. A boundary for AA is a subset F⊆Δ(A)F \subseteq \Delta(A) such that, for every a∈Aa \in A, max⁡φ∈Δ(A)∣a^(φ)∣=sup⁡φ∈F∣a^(φ)∣.\max_{\varphi \in \Delta(A)} \abs{\hat a(\varphi)} = \sup_{\varphi \in F} \abs{\hat a(\varphi)}. The Shilov boundary ∂A\partial A is the smallest closed boundary for AA: a closed boundary contained in every closed boundary.

Remarks

The existence of a smallest closed boundary is a theorem of Shilov: the intersection of all closed boundaries is again a boundary.

Example: the disc algebra A(𝔻)A(\mathbb{D}) of continuous functions on the closed unit disc 𝔻‾\overline{\mathbb{D}} that are holomorphic in the open disc, with the sup norm. Its character space is 𝔻‾\overline{\mathbb{D}}, through the evaluations at points. By the maximum modulus principle, the unit circle 𝕋\mathbb{T} is a closed boundary. No proper closed subset F⊊𝕋F \subsetneq \mathbb{T} is a boundary. Indeed, let ζ∈𝕋∖F\zeta \in \mathbb{T} \setminus F; the function f(z)=(1+ζ‾z)/2f(z) = (1 + \overline{\zeta} z) / 2 satisfies ∣f∣<1\abs{f} < 1 on 𝔻‾∖{ζ}\overline{\mathbb{D}} \setminus \set{\zeta} and f(ζ)=1f(\zeta) = 1. So its supremum on the compact set FF is less than 11. Hence ∂A(𝔻)=𝕋\partial A(\mathbb{D}) = \mathbb{T}.

Non-example: for the disc algebra, the circle {∣z∣=1/2}\set{\abs{z} = 1/2} is closed but not a boundary, since f(z)=zf(z) = z has maximum modulus 1/21/2 there and 11 on 𝔻‾\overline{\mathbb{D}}.

For A=C(X)A = C(X) with XX compact Hausdorff, the Shilov boundary is all of XX. Indeed, if F⊊XF \subsetneq X is closed and x∉Fx \notin F, Urysohn's lemma gives f∈C(X)f \in C(X) with f(x)=1f(x) = 1 and f=0f = 0 on FF, so FF is not a boundary.
