Definition
Let be an abelian category, for example the category of modules over a ring. A short exact sequence in is a diagram of objects and morphisms of such that:
- is a monomorphism;
- is an epimorphism;
- the image of equals the kernel of .
Remarks
Equivalently, the sequence is exact at , at and at . Equivalently again, , is a kernel of , and is a cokernel of . Then is isomorphic to the quotient , and is called an extension of by .
Example: is short exact, with the reduction modulo . Multiplication by is injective, is onto, and the image of the first map is the kernel of .
Non-example: , with the inclusion, fails clause 3. Clauses 1 and 2 hold, but the image of is while the kernel of is .
