SIC-POVM

Builds on POVMBloch sphere

Definition

Let d≥2d \ge 2 and let ℂd\C^d carry its standard inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot}. A SIC-POVM in ℂd\C^d consists of unit vectors ψ1,…,ψd2\psi_1, \dots, \psi_{d^2} in ℂd\C^d such that ∣⟨ψj,ψk⟩∣2=1d+1for all j≠k.\abs{\ip{\psi_j}{\psi_k}}^2 = \frac{1}{d+1} \quad \text{for all } j \ne k. It is used as the POVM whose elements are Ej=1d∣ψj⟩⟨ψj∣E_j = \frac1d \lvert \psi_j \rangle \langle \psi_j \rvert for j=1,…,d2j = 1, \dots, d^2.

Remarks

The equal overlaps force ∑j∣ψj⟩⟨ψj∣=d I\sum_j \lvert \psi_j \rangle \langle \psi_j \rvert = d\, I, so ∑jEj=I\sum_j E_j = I and the EjE_j do form a POVM. The EjE_j are linearly independent and span all operators on ℂd\C^d, so the probabilities tr⁡(Ejρ)\tr(E_j\rho) determine every state ρ\rho.

Example: for d=2d = 2, let r1,…,r4r_1, \dots, r_4 be the vertices of a regular tetrahedron on the unit sphere of ℝ3\R^3, so rj⋅rk=−1/3r_j \cdot r_k = -1/3 for j≠kj \ne k. Let ψj\psi_j be the qubit state with Bloch vector rjr_j. Then ∣⟨ψj,ψk⟩∣2=(1+rj⋅rk)/2=1/3=1/(d+1)\abs{\ip{\psi_j}{\psi_k}}^2 = (1 + r_j \cdot r_k)/2 = 1/3 = 1/(d+1).

Non-example: the six eigenvectors of the three Pauli matrices in ℂ2\C^2 are not a SIC-POVM. There are 6≠d2=46 \ne d^2 = 4 of them, and their pairwise overlaps take the values 00 and 1/21/2, not 1/31/3.

The phrase "SIC" also denotes the set of vectors ψj\psi_j or the lines they span.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
