Example

Let S={0,1}S = \set{0, 1} with the family of open sets {∅,{1},{0,1}}\set{\emptyset, \set{1}, \set{0, 1}}. This family contains ∅\emptyset and SS, and it is closed under unions and intersections, as one checks on its three members. So SS is a topological space, the Sierpiński space.

  • SS is a T0 space: the open set {1}\set{1} contains 11 but not 00.
  • SS is not a T1 space: the only open set that contains 00 is SS, and it also contains 11.
  • The closed sets are ∅\emptyset, {0}\set{0} and SS, so the closure of {1}\set{1} is SS.
  • SS is connected, since its only clopen sets are ∅\emptyset and SS.

For any topological space XX, a map f ⁣:X→Sf \colon X \to S is continuous if and only if f−1({1})f^{-1}(\set{1}) is open in XX. So continuous maps X→SX \to S correspond one to one to open subsets of XX.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 6 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
